Improvement works at Moorfields Eye Centre at St George’s Hospital
26 January 2018

Moorfields at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been providing specialist ophthalmology services to patients in south London since 2001. Since that time, Moorfields at St George’s has grown significantly, and no remodeling work has taken place on Duke Elder Ward.

To ensure it can deliver the very best eye care services to patients, Duke Elder Ward will undergo a full refurbishment from January 2018. The refurbishment will include a ward redesign and waiting area reconfiguration, improving patient experience and providing new, modern and fit-for-purpose accommodation and clinical pathways.

To undergo this refurbishment, the Duke Elder Ward must close for a minimum of six to eight months and will close the week commencing 8 January 2018.

  • The injection service will relocate to Moorfields Eye Hospital, City Road, London EC1V 2PD
  • Pre-assessment, theatre and day case activity will locate to St Anthony’s Hospital, London Road, Cheam, Sutton SM3 9DW.
  • Outpatients department, paediatric and complex surgery and urgent care out of hours will remain at St George’s Hospital.
  • Medical retina, uveitis and vitreo retinal clinics usually held on Duke Elder Ward will remain at St George’s Hospital in the Moorfields outpatients department on the ground floor, Lanesborough wing.

Patients will receive details of their new location appointments in their appointment letters.

The services offered at Moorfields City Road and St Anthony’s will be the same as that at Moorfields at St George’s.

The services apologises for any inconvenience this may cause, however, this work is essential in ensuring Moorfields can provide the best clinical environment for patients and staff.
