Top police officer and TV presenter to give advice to local people on avoiding fraud and scams
12 February 2018

Local residents are invited to a free information event, with Police Commissioner Cressida Dick and TV presenter Gloria Hunniford, to learn more about how you can avoid falling victim to fraudsters.

On 10 March, Richmond Police will host the event at Twickenham Stadium.

The event is being supported by the Richmond and Kingston Adults Safeguarding Board. Sarah Loades, lead nurse from the safeguarding team says: “Not only are vulnerable people more at risk from being scammed, everyone is at risk in one form or another. We recognise that being a victim of fraud or scams can affect individuals’ mental, psychological and physical health and we want to raise awareness of the steps that can be taken to stay safe.”

At the event officers and other crime prevention advisers will be giving advice on measures residents can take to avoid falling victims to dodgy doorstep salesman, cunning cold-callers or illegal internet scammers. Also presenting will be Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in London, Cressida Dick and TV presenter and radio broadcaster Gloria Hunniford.

Presentations will include:

  • Information regarding Operation Falcon (MET police Fraud)
  • What you need to know about courier scams and ATM security
  • How to guard against common frauds
  • How to protect yourself from cyber scams

Les Jackson, from Richmond Police, added:

“The aim of the Metropolitan Police Service is to protect society from becoming victims of crime. Our aim at Richmond is to work in partnership with local business to highlight the problems all residents face with that despicable crime - scamming.

“The elderly, although not confined solely to the elderly, are being targeted. This event will bring experts from many fields to explain the dangers that face all.”

The event is on Saturday 10 March from 10am to 2pm. There is no need to book. For more information call 0208 247 5826
