70 Years of the NHS NHS Kingston

Celebrating 70 years of our National Health Service

Celebrating 70 years of our National Health Service
08 June 2018

The NHS is turning 70 on 5 July 2018.

Here at Kingston CCG, we are marking the occasion by recognising the amazing contribution of our hard-working and dedicated staff who work tirelessly to improve the health of everyone in the borough.

This special birthday is also an opportunity for everyone in the borough to show their support for the NHS in a number of different ways.  This could be by volunteering, raising money for local NHS charities, or by taking steps to look after your own health and use services wisely.

Here are just some of the ways you can help us celebrate this year:

Host an NHS Big 7Tea party

Join us in raising a cuppa to the NHS by hosting a Big 7Tea Party at your home, school, workplace, garden or street.  You can hold your party on or around the NHS’s birthday on 5 July and raise money for your local NHS charity.

Register here for a resource pack that will provide you with everything you need to hold your own NHS tea party.

Take part in the NHS70 parkrun

On Saturday 9 June, the NHS and parkrun UK will jointly host an NHS70 themed park run at over 200 locations up and down the country.

We are joining with the Bushy Park parkrun and encourage all NHS employees in the area, their family and friends, and regular park run participants to come out and celebrate the NHS.  The parkrun is an encouragement to get active, whether that be by walking, jogging or running – individually or with others.

Parkruns are free, 5k events that take place every Saturday morning.  On Saturday 9 June we’d like to see lots of NHS style fancy dress and have lots of fun.

Pledge to use NHS services wisely

There are things that we can all do for ourselves and for one another to help the NHS work effectively, and to make sure resources are used responsibly.  This includes keeping GP appointments, calling NHS 111 when medical help is needed fast but it’s not life threatening, visiting the local pharmacist for advice on minor health concerns and signing up for GP online services at my practice.  Find out more here.

Take care of yourself

If you look after yourself, you’re looking after the NHS. Help make the NHS sustainable for future generations by looking at what small changes you can make to improve your health and wellbeing. For example, getting more active, eating more healthily, reducing alcohol consumption and quitting smoking. Find out more here.

Give blood and join the organ donation register

With just a few clicks you can save lives by registering to give blood  and join the organ donor register. Every day thousands of people’s lives are saved or improved thanks to the generosity of our donors. But, sadly, there are still lots of patients the NHS can’t treat because we don’t have enough supplies.

Volunteers from all walks of life have made a huge contribution to the NHS. As well as helping the NHS to enhance the experience patients receive, you can gain new skills and make new friends.
