September is World Alzheimer's Month and World Alzheimer's day is September 21.

Globally the number of people living with dementia will increase from 50 million in 2018 to 152 million in 2050, a 204% increase.

Here are some activities available to people caring for someone who has dementia or who has dementia themselves. 

Peer support group

Alzheimer's Society Kingston is running a new support service for carers of people with dementia in the borough. 

The group offers advice, information and the opportunity to meet with other carers in a friendly supportive environment.

The group runs on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, from 10:30 - 12:30. Sessions take place in Room 32 Acacia Wing, Tolworth Hospital, Red Lion Road, Surbiton KT6 7QU (parking is £2 on site and the K1 stops next to the hospital). Dementia day care

The Devonshire Care Home in New Malden is offering a new day care facility for people living with dementia that are not quite ready for residential care. 

There also offer a free social coffee morning every Wednesday from 10:00-12.30 for people living with dementia and their carers, in a safe and welcoming environment to make new friends.


Staywell Saturday club

There is a Saturday club for people living with dementia and their carers.

This takes place at Raleigh House, 14 Nelson Road, New Malden, KT3 5EA, from 11:00 – 14:00. To register call 020 8949 4244.

Kingston Carers Network wellbeing activities for dementia carers

The following activities will run monthly until early next year.  For further information, email Vanessa or call 020 3559 2824

Dementia Carers Fitness Session, followed by refreshments in the club (carer only)
The session: Will combine equipped and body weight circuits. All activities are adaptable to any ability. Just bring a willingness to have fun.
When: The 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month. 

Where: Surbiton Racket Fitness & Club
Cost: FREE

'Games' session (carer and cared for)
The session: Dementia-friendly games, running for roughly one-hour and work up from a sensory perspective to focussing on skills such as catching and throwing. Sessions will focus on what you can do and will conclude with a group game.   
When: The 1st and 3rd Monday of every month.
Time: 11am

Cost: FREE
Dementia Carers Lunch Club (carer only)
A monthly social lunch club for dementia carers – a chance to meet other carers over a lovely lunch!

When: First Thursday of each month
