Review leads to introduction of new services within GP practices

Review leads to introduction of new services within GP practices
17 April 2019

Kingston Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) regularly reviews the services it commissions for patients in the borough of Kingston to ensure that they are fit for purpose and meet patient need.  Following a review of primary care (GP) services, by the CCG and GP practice representatives in Kingston, some new services will begin to be introduced across some GP practices from April 2019, and it is planned that by April 2020 all practices in Kingston will offer these new patient services.

The new services will include:

  • A more holistic and robust approach for supporting patients with long-term and chronic conditions by providing longer appointment times with GPs.
  • Provision for quick diagnosis of skin lesions.
  • Regularising availability of ear irrigation services.
  • In addition to this, practices will be given resource to help them manage demand for appointments over the winter months, for example, promoting ways for patients to self-care.

These new services have been made possible by identifying areas where CCG commissioned provision has not been seen to be beneficial or where there has been duplication.

The review also noted that practices were commissioned to provide GP appointments at the weekend, but now that separate funding for GP extended access appointments (8am to 8pm, 7 days a week) is in place, the CCG can divert its funds elsewhere.

To access a GP appointment for Monday to Friday, patients should contact their GP practice.

To access a GP appointment at the weekend, patients should call 020 3841 7942.  Weekend GP appointments for all patients in Kingston are available at the following locations: Surbiton Health Centre, Kingston Health Centre and the Merritt Health Centre.
