More GP appointments available through 111
With winter pressures hitting hard in the NHS, both locally and nationally, innovative health partners in Kingston are the first in south west London to offer more GP appointments to patients via the NHS 111 service.  Kingston Extended Primary Care Service,  which is provided by Kingston GP Chambers have worked with the 111 service to enable access to the GP extended hours appointment booking system. This means that NHS 111 staff can now book a GP appointment for Kingston patients at the weekend & Bank Holidays. This new service has been available since December 23rd and offers the 111 service some 216 appointments every weekend.
Director of Primary Care for Kingston Clinical Commissioning Group, Kathryn MacDermott, commented: “Making extra GP appointments available to be directly booked by NHS 111 staff was not the easiest thing to set up, but we were determined to ensure we offered as many ways as possible to prevent Kingston people going to the Emergency Department when they didn’t need to. NHS services are always stretched in the winter months, so this is another option to try and keep the local system moving. We expect the number of appointments being booked through the 111 service will continue to increase and are grateful to all the organisations that have worked hard to make this happen.”

Tips to stay well this winter

NHS Kingston Clinical Commissioning Group is supporting the national 2017/18 Stay Well This Winter campaign.

The Stay Well This Winter campaign is a joint initiative from NHS England and Public Health England, to help people, and particularly those with long-term health conditions, children under 5 and those over 65, prepare for winter and ward off common winter illnesses.

Winter can be seriously bad for health - increasing the risk of blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes for those with a long-term health condition or who are over 65, whilst young children can readily pick up and spread illnesses amongst their wider circle - including family members of all ages.

There are a number of things you can do to prepare against the cold weather:

  • At the first sign of a cough or a cold, get immediate advice from your pharmacist before it gets more serious.
  • Speak to your pharmacist about medicines you should have in stock over winter.
  • Pick up prescription medications before the Christmas holidays start as many GPs and pharmacies will close over the holidays.
  • It is important to keep warm in winter, so heat your home to at least 18꙳C (65꙳F), if you can, you might prefer your living room to be slightly warmer.
  • Make sure you get your flu jab.
  • If you need help over the holiday period when your GP surgery or pharmacy is closed, call NHS 111 or visit www.nhs.uk

These tips can help you and your family prepare for winter, stay well and get well quickly.
