Active Lifestyles

Want to build your fitness and improve your health?  There are a range of options in Kingston whatever your age or ability.

Our programmes include:

  • Get Active
  • Walk 4 Life
  • Parkrun

Get Active

Get Active is a structured 12 week exercise programme that offers a series of one to one sessions with a qualified exercise specialist. You will benefit from a personalised training programme to suit your ability and will be given on-going support by your instructor throughout the programme.  Activities featured in your programme could include one or more of the options below:

  • Group exercise classes
  • Organised health walks
  • Outdoor exercise sessions
  • Women only gym
  • Active gardening
  • Swimming
  • Nutrition advice

The programme is available at 5 leisure centres in Kingston:

  • YMCA Surbiton
  • YMCA Hawker Centre
  • Tolworth Recreation Centre
  • Malden Centre
  • Kingfisher Leisure Centre

Simply choose the centre that is most convenient to you!

Sessions are offered at a reduced rate of £3.60 and a discounted gym membership will be offered if you complete the full 12 week course.

Would you like to join the programme? 

Get Active is available to anybody who meets the following criteria:

  • Over 16 years of age
  • Live or work in Kingston
  • Exercise less than half an hour, twice a week
  • Have a health condition (physical or mental) or your health is at risk due to your weight

How to join: Check with your GP or health professional that you are suitable for the programme and ask them to complete a Get Active referral form. Alternatively, you can call our Healthy Lifestyles confidential helpline on Freephone 0800 028 8694 or email healthy.lifestyles@rbk.kingston.gov.uk.

Active Gardening

Active Gardening is a FREE allotment programme available to people aged 16 years and over and is a great way to improve your physical and mental health. Allotments provide a healthy outdoor activity with the satisfaction of taking exercise whilst planting and harvesting healthy, low cost, fresh and locally grown food. There are also additional benefits such as social interaction, making friends and being part of a supportive team. You will learn how to prepare the ground, what to grow seasonally and how to maintain the crops through the expertise of members of the group.

Change4Life Kingston

Change4Life Kingston is a local programme that supports the national Change4Life campaign ‘Eat Less, Move More, Live Longer’. It offers a range of activities for local communities in Kingston including families, young people, and adults of all ages. The programmes are either free or low cost and take place in local venues and green spaces across Kingston, so there is something for everyone.

Walk4Life

Walk4Life is a programme of FREE weekly, social walks of between 30 and 60 minutes duration for communities and families. The walks are for those who would like to improve their physical and mental wellbeing and enjoy the added benefit of exercising outdoors. The walks are graded to suit a range of abilities led by qualified walk leaders and take place in some of the most beautiful open spaces Kingston has to offer. Children and young people under 16 years should be accompanied by an adult.

Bike4Life

We have a range of bikes for hire at our new cycle hub at the Hawker Centre in Kingston. Our hire prices are offer subsidised rates for families or group hires. Cycling is a healthy way to get around town or for a day of invigorating fun along the riverside.

Dance4Life

Dance4Life is a low cost varied programme of dance opportunities set in a range of locations across Kingston. Qualified instructors lead low intensity classes of popular dance activities, meaning you can increase your physical activity in a social and vibrant environment!

Run4Life

Perfect for those new to running or fitness training and who are looking for a manageable training programme for beginners, Run4Life offers an 8 weekly sessions tailored to your specific needs. With additional online podcasts available from NHS Choices and the option to run a 5km event at the end of each course, this programme is a great introduction to running.

Parkrun

Parkrun is a 5km timed run, jog or walk open to all abilities and ages. It is held every Saturday at 9.00am, and it’s FREE to join in. The route is supported by stewards along the way and starts and finishes on the tow-path adjacent to the Hawker Centre, Lower Ham Road, Kingston, KT2 5BH. Whether you are interested in taking part as an established runner, aspiring runner or simply to improve your health and fitness, then Parkrun is for you. Children need to be accompanied by an adult.
